To flush or not to flush Fumo, Street join the push for waterless urinals

The 58-story Comcast Center could save 1.6 million gallons of water a year with the no-flush basins, advocates say.
But the influential Plumbers Union Local 690 has blocked the code change because the urinals lack water lines and therefore require less labor to install.
Philadelphians for a More Progressive Philadelphia, together with Phillyblog.com, has called on the Web community to protest the plumbers' position on potties. They urge Philadelphians not to take a waterless-urinal ban sitting down.

Women with boob job may explode in outer space

Women with boob jobs may be banned from Virgin tycoon Richard Branson's upcoming space flights out of fear their breasts could go boom.
Flights aboard the private shuttle Virgin Galactic are slated to begin in 2008, at a cost of $200,000 per passenger.
But there's a hitch, due to cabin pressure.
Spokesman Will Whitehorn said, "We've discovered there may well be issues with breast augmentation. We're not sure whether they could stand the trip - they could well explode."

Google Hires 15-Year Old

15-year old Tom Vandetta found a neat trick described on the internet: how to upload a fake press release to a free wire service, and get Google News to pick it up and disseminate it, thereby making it look like real news. Of course, he couldn't resist trying this trick out, so he decided to write a release from Google itself announcing that they were hiring him:
(I-Newswire) - 15 year old student, Tom Vendetta has been hired by search engine giant Google Inc. The student will receive a lowered salary, which will be placed into a bank account for future education, said Google CEO Larry Page. When asked what role Vendetta will play at the Tech Giant's offices, Page said he wouldnt have a role at the Main Offices. Instead he would work from his home in the New Jersey suburbs. Vendetta will be incharge of working with recent security flaw's in Google's beta e-mail service, "Gmail". Google said they first found out about him when they discovered the student's blog, at http://tomvendetta.be. The media giant said they looked forward to working with Vendetta's expertise in JavaScript and AJAX.

Hack Attack: Become a Gmail master - Lifehacker

Gmail is hands-down the best web-based email service on the ‘net. Conversation threads, search, tagging, and keyboard shortcuts have completely revolutionized the way I look at my inbox. I manage all of my email from my personal Gmail inbox, including the daily flood of Lifehacker messages. At this point, I can’t imagine a program I could use to manage my email any more efficiently.

Despite my undying love for Gmail, there are still a lot of people who aren’t won over by sheer enthusiasm alone, and still others who just aren’t taking full advantage of the features and functions they’ve got at their fingertips in Gmail. Either way, the only thing a Gmail naysayer needs is a better understanding of everything you can do with Gmail.

PC Upgrade Planning: 2006 Edition

Now that it's officially springtime, our thoughts turn to . . . upgrading our PCs.
That's not exactly romantic, to be sure, but upgrading your PC system affects your bottom line directly. Plan poorly, and you're stuck with older technology for longer than you might like. If you're smart about your upgrade planning, you can extend the life of your existing system or even plan out the life of an entirely new system build.
The world of desktop PC processors looks to be dramatically shifting in 2006. But the major changes won't occur until the June timeframe. So unless your system is falling apart, or you need more processor horsepower right now for some key application, it's best to wait until summer.

Worker blames Lodi for his gaffe

A California man has been thwarted from suing himself for a motor-vehicle accident - but that's not stopping his wife from trying.
Curtis Gokey crashed the Lodi city dump truck he was driving into his own car last December, and then filed a $3,600 claim for the accident, even though he admitted he was at fault.
The city denied the claim, so Gokey's wife, Rhonda, filed a claim under her name, and for $1,200 more.
She's asking for more money because "I'm not as nice as my husband is."

Are We Happy Yet?

Some 45% of all Republicans report being very happy, compared with just 30% of Democrats and 29% of independents. This finding has also been around a long time; Republicans have been happier than Democrats every year since the General Social Survey began taking its measurements in 1972.

That explains a lot.

tossing a decapitated chicken (weird but true)

A man was arrested in Elmhurst, Ill., after a cop spotted him tossing a decapitated chicken, still flapping its wings, from his car.
He explained that he was killing the bird for good luck as part of his Santeria religion.
After determining that decapitating a chicken isn't a crime - it's considered a humane way to kill one - cops charged the fowl fellow with littering.

Project 'Origami' comes to life as 'Ultramobile PC'

The Ultramobile PC plays back music and video, but also lets users do other computer tasks, such as e-mail and Internet searches.
Looking a bit like a handheld video game console, with the heft of a large paperback book, the inch-thick PC features a 7-inch screen and weighs less than 2½ pounds. It runs a full Windows XP computer operating system, accessed with a pencil-like stylus, and supports Bluetooth and Wi-Fi wireless hook-ups.
The battery lasts up to three hours, and it is equipped with a 60-gigabyte hard drive. Two models are expected to hit store shelves by early April, priced at around $600 to $1,000.

The Elbow Bump Goes to Work

Elbow bump. No, that isn't the latest type of punch from the National Hockey League or Ultimate Fighting. It's the way that the World Health Organization would like us to greet each other from now on.

Yep, the handshake is seen as too efficient a way to spread disease — germs go from their nose, to their hands, to your hands to your nose and eyes — yuck! So in business and social settings we'll soon all be asked to mimic the greeting that doctors and scientists use when they are working around such diseases as the Ebola virus — to bump elbows when we want to greet another person. Welcome to the new world of bird flu

Berkeley Law The Latest To Accidentally Admit Thousands Via Email

There have been quite a few stories over the years concerning universities accidentally sending out congratulations emails to applicants when they didn't mean to. By this point, you would have figured that most universities would have put in place a decent process to prevent this from happening -- but apparently not. The latest is Berkeley's law school. The director of admissions there was apparently teaching a new hire how to use the email system, including (uh oh) how to send a single message to many people at the same time. He just so happened to pick the "you've been accepted email" and the list of all 7,000 applicants and then, naturally, pressed the send key. Seems like those first year classes might get a little crowded this year...
